Response to meningococcal plain polysaccharide A&C vacc.
- serological response in more than 90% of patients - occurs 5-7 days after vaccination
- no protection against Group B organisms
- there is less response in young infants than is seen in adults - there is little response to Group C polysaccharide below 18 months of age and little response to Group A polysaccharide below 3 months of age
- induced immunity lasts 3-5 years - however a more rapid decline in immunity has been noted in younger children
