Schilder actually described two diseases affecting the myelination of the cerebral cortical neurones.
The first is now termed adrenoleukodystrophy.
The second is a form of multiple sclerosis which occurs most frequently in children. It is characterised by giant plaques of demyelination which affect large areas of cerebral cortex. The course is one of gradual deterioration rather than relapse and remission.
