Villous atrophy is a histological appearance, where small intestine has flat mucosa and crypt hypertrophy.

There are a number of causes, in descending order of frequency:

  • coeliac disease
  • post enteritis sydrome
  • cow's milk protein intolerance
  • giardiasis
  • immune deficiency states
