The inital stages of a Shouldice repair are similar to those involved in most inguinal hernia repairs. In summary:

  • skin and subcutaneous fat incision down to external oblique aponeurosis
  • division of the external oblique aponeurosis from superficial to deep rings along the line of its fibres
  • exposure of the cord with blunt dissection from surrounding inguinal canal
