A mid stream urine specimen is one which is collected after urine has flowed for a short while, with collection terminated before the flow ceases.
The theory is that this specimen of urine should be representative of urine actually in the bladder, uncontaminated by urethral organisms, and should, in the absence of infection, be sterile.
The specimen obtained is usually sent for microscopy, culture and sensitivity (MCS).
