This may be subdivided into:

  • chronic infection with a specific organism, for example:
    • bacteria e.g. Haemophilus influenzae
    • fungi e.g. Aspergillus, Candida, Cryptococcus
    • tuberculosis
    • syphilis
    • Yaws

  • atrophic rhinitis - either as a result of chronic infection with a specific organism, or due to overzealous surgery

  • immune deficiency:
    • primary e.g. Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, ataxia telangiectasia, selective IgA or IgG deficiency
    • secondary e.g. from immunosuppressant therapy, AIDS

  • muciliary clearance abnormality
