Toxaemia is literally the presence of toxins within the blood. It commonly causes a number of systemic symptoms including malaise, fever and vomiting.

It may occur with:

  • septicaemia
  • septic shock
  • pre-eclampsia
  • toxic shock syndrome

Pyaemia and septicaemia are both subtypes of toxaemia; bacteraemia is not necessarily associated with clinical toxaemia.
