Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome describes thiamine deficiency causing major organic brain disease, particularly in Western countries.

It is clearly important to make an early diagnosis of thiamine deficiency in order to treat the disease while the deficits are still reversible.

There is a gradual transition between the reversible deficits of Wernicke's encephalopathy and the irreversible damage of Korsakoff's psychosis.
