Drugs designed to improve mucosal resistance include:

  • sucralfate:
    • a mixture of aluminium hydroxide and sulphated sucrose
    • may protect the ulcer from acid-pepsin attack
    • may reduce phenytoin absorption

  • misoprostol:
    • a prostaglandin analogue
    • inhibits acid secretion in addition to protecting the mucosa
    • used to prevent gastric ulceration in patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
