  • urine shows marked increase of uroporphyrin but only slight increase in coproporphyrin; may exhibit characteristic pink red fluorescence when illuminated with a Wood's lamp

  • increased plasma protoporphyrin
  • liver function tests may be abnormal - elevated transaminase and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase levels (1)
