The pituitary fossa is an indentation in the roof of the sphenoidal sinus.

Various important structures lie in close relation to the pituitary fossa. These may be encroached upon by an expanding pituitary tumour. Some important relations are described below:

  • immediately lateral to the fossa lies the cavernous sinus - this contains the sixth cranial nerve and, in the lateral wall, the third, fourth and upper two divisions of the fifth cranial nerve
  • internal carotid artery - lies in the sinus lateral to the dorsum sella
