Patients who have West African connections may require testing for HIV-2.

The majority of ELISA tests use HIV-1 antigen, and the antibody to HIV-2 may not be fully reactive with these. The most recent ELISA tests include combined HIV-1/2 antigens and clinicians should check that the laboratory is using them.
