The following patients should be offered a follow-up appointment in contact tracing programmes:

  • after 1 year for tuberculin positive close contacts of sputum smear positive cases

  • tuberculin negative contacts should be given a tuberculin retest after 8 weeks:
    • if tuberculin conversion has occured then they are treated for TB
    • patients aged less than 35 who remain tuberculin negative should be given BCG vaccination
