The main structure of interest are the:

  • carotid arteries
    • the carotid arterial pulse should be assessed for the amplitude, shape and volume
    • most of the information gained concerns the function of the aorta and left ventricle

  • the jugular veins
    • the jugular venous pressure provides information about the function of the right atrium and right ventricles
