Management of salt and water depletion

Any causes of salt and water loss, e.g. vomiting and diarrhoea, should be treated.

Normal saline infusion will then make good any salt and water deficits.

When polyuria is secondary to ADH deficiency, give 5 units of aqueous pitressin subcutaneously with enough normal saline to replace salt losses.
