Possible causes of localised swelling around the eyes include:

  • styes
  • chalazion - meibomian cysts
  • sebaceous cysts
  • sudorific cysts
  • dermoid cysts - usually arise at the upper inner and outer angles of the orbit
  • rodent ulcer - usually arise at the lid margin
  • papilloma
  • xanthelasma
  • pinguecula
  • pterygium
  • lacrimal gland and lacrimal sac disorders
