Early neonatal death is defined as occurring between days 0 and 6 of life, and is given as a rate per thousand live births.

In England and Wales in 1989 the END rate per 1000 live births was 3.7.

The END rate is usually far greater than the LND rate, mainly because there is a very high mortality amongst premature infants within the first 24 hours after birth.
