Four genetic loci have been described which cause the hereditary long QT syndrome:

  • LQT1:
    • the KVLQT1 gene
    • codes for a potassium channel alpha subunit

  • LQT2:
    • the HERG gene
    • codes for a potassium channel subunit

  • LQT3:
    • the SCN5A gene
    • codes for a sodium channel subunit

  • LQT4:
    • no gene yet identified
