Autonomic failure has three main causes:

  • central causes:
    • often neurodegenerative
    • occasionally tumour, trauma or infection

  • peripheral causes:
    • often metabolic disorders
    • occasionally autoimmune

  • adverse drug effects:
    • hypotensives
    • antidepressants
    • neurotoxic agents
