  • infection is caused by Mycobacterium bovis
  • acquired by drinking untreated milk or from contact with cattle and meat products - occupations at risk include those in which cattle are handled e.g. dairy farmers, abbatoir workers, vets
  • M. bovis has been found in badgers and deers
  • BCG immunisation is essential and effective for those at risk
  • human infection results in a chronic progressive disease with weight loss and fever
  • diagnosis is as for human tuberculosis
