A lump may be composed of cells (solid), extravascular fluid (serum, urine, synovial fluid, CSF) which present as a cystic lump, gas, or intravascular blood.

The different aspects of the composition of a lump that are described are:-

  • consistency } gas
  • fluctuation } or
  • fluid thrill } fluid
  • resonance } or
  • translucency } solid
  • also if vascular
    • pulsatility
    • compressibility
    • bruits
