These result from hyperextension and are frequently missed in spinal injury. They are more common in the lumbar region and are best revealed by oblique X-ray.

Treatment is by means of a plastic jacket to avoid the possibility of non-union and spondylolisthesis, especially at L4/5. The jacket is retained until X-ray reveals union.
