The principal manifestations of CMV infection in AIDS are:

  • in the eye, with retinitis
  • in the gastrointestinal tract, where it may cause lower oesophageal ulceration and an ascending colitis causing diarrhoea
  • adrenalitis

Less common in AIDS, but more important in immunosuppressed individuals is involvement of the lung.
