This is a safer surgical procedure in comparison to inflow stasis pulmonary embolectomy for the removal of a pulmonary embolus.

The sternum is opened and the right atrium and aorta are cannulated. Cardiopulmonary bypass is established and the pulmonary artery is opened and the clot sucked out.
