Diarhhoea can be broadly divided according to the duration into:

  • acute - duration is less than 4 weeks
  • chronic - lasts more than 4 weeks in duration (1)

Some classifications includes a category between acute and chronic time frame –

  • acute diarrhoea - duration is less than 2 weeks
  • persistent diarrhoea - duration is between 2-4 weeks
  • chronic diarrhoea - lasts more than 4 weeks in duration (2)
