Homeostasis describes the maintenance of a stable system. In physiology, the system may be any one which maintains the body within certain parameters, be they the renal and respiratory systems for acid-base balance or the cardiovascular system for blood pressure.

Homeostatic systems usually have some degree of negative feedback.
