Causes include:

  • chronic smoking
  • yellow nail syndrome - yellow nails are found in association with peripheral lymphoedema
  • a complication of prolonged drug therapy e.g. with tetracycline
  • the nail may have a yellow tinge in patients with jaundice or AIDS
