In patients with early HIV disease the clinical features may be similar to the general population:

  • fevers
  • cough, haemoptysis and dyspnoea
  • chest pain

On the chest radiograph the disease resembles post-primary tuberculosis with upper lobe cavitation and infiltrates.

In more advanced disease the presentation non-specific:

  • malaise
  • weight loss
  • fever

On the chest radiograph the disease resembles primary tuberculosis with mediastinal lymphadenopathy, infiltrates and pleural effusion.
