Neck stiffness often makes the investigator think of meningitis. However, it may also be caused by:

  • subarachnoid haemorrhage
  • tetanus
  • upper lobe pneumonia
  • tender posterior cervical adenopathy
  • retropharyngeal abscess
  • rheumatoid arthritis
