Tetany may be caused by:

  • hypocalcaemia

  • hypomagnesaenia

  • hyperventilation

  • alkalotic hypokalaemia

  • rapid correction of chronic acidosis (treated with calcium, as for alkalosis)

  • tetanus

  • electric shock
