The general inspection of the patient should detect signs of uraemia such as scratch marks, seizures or vomiting.

Specific examination of the urological system should include:

  • palpation and percussion of an enlarged bladder
  • detection of palpable hydronephrosis
  • digital rectal examination:
    • may detect a hard prostatic carcinoma
    • may detect a tender, boggy, infected prostate
