This fracture may be treated by traction and splintage if the fracture is only slightly displaced, or if reduction occurs easily with the knee in flexion. After 4-6 weeks traction may be replaced by the use of a cast-brace. At this point the patient may be allowed up and to weight-bear partially with crutches.

Open reduction is used:

  • if closed reduction fails
  • if displacement is significant
  • if the fracture does not reduce easily
