Radiation enteritis

A dose of radiation exceeding 50 Gy will cause radiation enteritis:

  • the most common cause is pelvic irradiation
  • the ileum and rectum are commonly affected

Acute radiation enteritis occurs at the time of exposure and usually lasts 6 weeks.

Chronic radiation enteritis is diagnosed if symptoms persist for more than 3 months.
