An aneurysmal bone cyst is a tumour-like lesion that contains cavities that are filled with blood.
Usually this type of bone cyst affects young adults and generally occurs in the spine and the metaphyses of long bones. An aneurysmal bone cyst is an expanding lesion and causes thinning of the bone cortex.
Radiologically there is a well-defined translucent area, which is often trabeculated, and may resemble a giant-cell tumour on radiographs. However, unlike the giant-cell tumour, an aneurysmal bone cyst is confined to the metaphyseal side of the growth plate.
Treatment with curettage and packing with bone chips is often effective.
