The intake of fluid and electrolytes for a dialysis- dependent patient should be adjusted for losses.

A typical replacement regime might include:

  • 750 ml water / day
  • 60 mmol sodium / day
  • 60 mmol potassium / day

Sodium bicarbonate (up to 1.8 g t.d.s.) may reverse any acidosis and increase GFR; often this intervention is limited by the large sodium load.
