Hyperventilation is an abnormally increased pulmonary ventilation. This condition results in a reduction of carbon dioxide tension and, if persistent, can lead to the development of an alkalosis.

The respiratory alkalosis lead to an increased binding of plasma calcium and a reduced ionised calcium (effective hypocalcaemia).
