Facet dislocation (unilateral, cervical spine)

In unilateral facet dislocation, only one facet has dislocated and/or fractured. The vertebral body appears to be partially displaced - less than one half of it's width, and the upper segment of spine is rotated on the lower. Cord damage is unusual; the injury is stable.

Initial treatment is aimed at reducing the dislocation; skull traction usually unlocks the single facet and reduces the dislocation. Traction is continued for a further 3 weeks; a collar is then worn for a further 6 weeks.
