Side effects include:

  • hypoglycaemia is the most common side effect and may be prolonged, especially in those with impaired renal function. The risk is greatest with the long-acting sulphonylureas such as glibenclamide and chlorpropamide
  • hyponatraemia is a problem with chlorpropamide which can increase the sensitivity of the renal tubules to ADH
  • weight gain secondary to reduced glucose losses in the urine
  • gastrointestinal disturbance
  • headache

Sensitivity reactions include:

  • transient rashes which may progress to erythema multiforme and exfoliative dermatitis
  • fever
  • jaundice
  • haematological disturbances including aplastic anaemia
  • facial flushing may be associated with chlorpropamide
