The causes of pulmonary fibrosis have been classified into upper and lower lobe causes. Obviously there is a high degree of overlap in these categories and an upper lobe cause may cause lower lobe pulmonary fibrosis.

Replacement fibrosis that is secondary to disorders such as infarction and pneumonia may be an upper or lower lobe fibrosis.
