About 90% of patients with a sliding hiatus hernia experience good results following surgery; the remainder have persistent or recurrent reflux.
The relief of symptoms is accompanied by a rise in resting pressure in the lower oesophageal sphincter of about 10 mm Hg. Recurrence of symptoms is more common than actual anatomical recurrence. The latter may be caused by poor surgery, shortening of the oesophagus, or by weakening of musculofascial structures by aging, atrophy, or obesity.
