The cause of the recurrent laryngeal palsy should be identified.

If there is bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy then an urgent tracheostomy maybe required.

In a unilateral palsy, improvement of the voice can be made by an endoscopic injection of Teflon paste alongside the paralysed cord. This procedure will allow the paralysed cord to oppose the normal cord and will improve voice production, improve the ability to cough and increase laryngeal competence.
