Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which preferentially inhibits the cyclo-oxygenase 2 isoenzyme (COX-2). COX-1 is less potently inhibited and may be able to continue to protect the gastric mucosa.
Meloxicam is an effective NSAID and may have fewer gastrointestinal side-effects.
