This is defined when there are immature cells (myelocytes and normoblasts) seen on the peripheral blood film.

Features include:

  • usually normocytic normochromic anaemia with numerous poikilocytes
  • normoblasts (nucleated red cells)
  • low-grade reticulocytosis (2-5%)
  • circulating immature white cells, generally myelocytes and promyelocytes
  • thrombocytopaenia is more common than thrombocythaemia
