Possible indications for a permanent pacemaker include:

  • a second degree block of Mobitz type II, or a third degree block
  • if the patient has symptomatic bradycardias eg sick sinus syndrome

Permanent pacemakers have been used for persistent bifascicular block following a myocardial infarction, but this is controversial.

Sometimes pacemakers may have a role in the suppression of resistant tachyarrhythmias.
