Proper diagnosis should involve a renogram - i.e. performing an IVU with diuretic.

Treatment is as follows:

  • surgical placement of double J stents in the ureter to maintain its patency
  • pyeloplasty - that is, the division of the ureter and re-attatchment above any external obstruction
