If CDH is not treated then there is progressive deformity and disability, and a predisposition to early osteoarthritis.

The most favourable time for treatment is within a week or two of birth, but successful outcomes can be achieved by measures at any time between 6 months and 6 years. Later presentation is more likely to involve the need for surgical correction.
