Types of gallstone

Gallstones consist of cholesterol, pigment - which is calcium bilirubinate - and calcium carbonate.

Four types are recognised:

  • pure cholesterol - accounting for 6% of stones
  • mixed - accounting for 80%
  • pigment - making up most of the last 14%
  • calcium carbonate - very rare
