Pleuritic pain

Pleurodynia is a paroxysmal pain in the region of the intercostal muscles on breathing. It may rarely be associated with a pleural friction rub detectable on auscultation.

Causes include:

  • pneumonia
  • pulmonary infarction
  • pulmonary, pleuritic or chest wall neoplasia
  • fractured ribs
  • muscle strains
  • herpes zoster in early stages
  • Bornholm disease
