The histologic grade is a guide to the likely outcome of the dysplastic changes:

  • CIN 1:
    • 50% resolve spontaneously
    • 20% progress to higher grades of dysplasia
    • 30% show no change, or change too slowly to be detected

  • CIN 2:
    • 33% resolve spontaneously
    • 33% progress
    • 33% show no change

  • CIN 3:
    • untreated, 20-30% develop carcinoma within 10 years
    • treated, 12% develop carcinoma within 30 years
