Nail disorders can be classified according to the scheme of a pathological sieve:

  • congenital defects
  • infection
  • neoplasia
  • trauma
  • changes secondary to systemic illness
  • changes secondary to dermatoses

Nail discolouration can be a symptom indicative of a spectrum of disease; it is dealt with in a separate submenu.
